Principal's Message

I joined Canon-McMillan in December 2024 as the principal of North Strabane Intermediate School. What initially drew me to our District was its strong leadership, commitment to a challenging and engaging curriculum and the wide range of opportunities that Canon-McMillan offers students and staff. I was also inspired by the deep sense of community pride and the shared commitment to excellence evident in every aspect of the school culture. Canon-McMillan is an environment where everyone is invested in student success.

The mission of North Strabane Intermediate is to provide a learning environment that addresses the social, emotional and academic needs of every student. Our focus is on helping students become lifelong learners who are creative, curious, resilient and empathetic towards others by understanding the value of positive relationships. To achieve our mission and goals, we will continue to challenge our students through engaging curriculum and provide support and enrichment, enabling them to reach their maximum potential. Our related arts schedule has been redesigned to provide students with the opportunity to engage in more in-depth and rigorous activities in STEM and the arts. We are committed to fostering a school environment where every child feels supported and empowered to grow both academically and individually.

At North Strabane, ensuring every student feels valued and included begins with the welcoming environment created by our teachers and staff. We are intentional about building strong relationships with students from the moment they enter our school, helping to bridge the transition from elementary to middle school. We recognize that 5th and 6th grade is a crucial stage in a child’s development, so we provide space for students to grow socially and emotionally, while equipping them with the academic and interpersonal skills students need for future success.

Our staff makes every effort to connect with each student, whether through daily interactions or support from our student services staff. Throughout the year, we offer a range of activities and events that enable students to explore their interests, build friendships and contribute to our school community in meaningful ways. We recognize that strong partnerships with families are key to the success of our students. Ongoing communication and collaboration with our families enable us to create a safe and inclusive environment where every student can thrive.

At North Strabane Intermediate, we are ‘Anchored in Excellence’. The phrase represents the heart of who we are and can be felt the moment you enter our building. Community connections and a shared belief in high expectations shape the culture at NSIS. Our 5th-grade teams are named after retired U.S. Navy submarines: Explorer, Triton, Barracuda and Nautilus. Meanwhile, our 6th-grade teams represent U.S. Navy aircraft carriers: Independence and Intrepid. Our team names reflect the values of teamwork and service, and serve as daily reminders of the importance of the qualities we aim to develop in every student.

What I enjoy most about being the principal at North Strabane is interacting with our dynamic students and exemplary staff. Whether it’s sharing a quick conversation in the hallway or observing students engaged in classroom activities, everyday moments are what make my role so rewarding and meaningful. It’s an honor to lead in a community committed to making ‘Every Day Count’ for our students.
